India Tree, Natural Decorating Color, 2.5 Ounce

If you're looking for an exact replica of the harmful chemical dyes you can buy anywhere, you won't find it here. However, if you're looking for a great alternative with a few flaws, this is it!! These are not bright, primary colors, they are closer to jewel tone but they aren't pale. They're more gel, not liquid. They mix well as long as you use them in the first year, I'd say. I found some that got lost in the back of my cabinet and used it knowing it was closing in on two years. It was a bit harder to mix and get the color evenly distributed but I left icing in my kitchen aid and walked away for a few minutes and it was fine after a few scrapes of the side and another round.I did try baking with it and I felt like it tasted like veggie chips (it was a dyed cake)! My dad gladly gobbled up the whole cake but I will not bake it again.Several of my kids react to dyes, from hives to migraines and for years, there weren't "fun" alternatives for them. This allows me to make some of that stuff for them, without worries.

We recently learned that my daughter is sensitive to artificial food color, as it can cause behavior and mood issues. In switching to more natural options, I bought India Tree natural decorating colors to add color to baked items such as cakes and cookies. We just used it to color white frosting for her birthday cupcakes, and were very pleased with the results. The colors were vivid, and I noticed little change to the flavor (In other naturally-colored products we've tried, we can often taste whatever was used to make the color.). Do not expect a bright blue; the blue came out more of a grey-lavender shade, and there was a hint of flavor to the blue, though not unpleasant. I personally liked the color, but it wasn't very blue. I found that both the Red and Yellow were bright and flavor-less. India Tree is the only natural decorating color I have been able to find, so I can't really compare it to any other brands, but I'm very happy that it's available so we have the option of food color without artificial colors.

I read many of the reviews before purchasing this and they were certainly mixed reviews. I’m super happy with the colors though next time I will whip it into my frosting because it did make it slightly runny with the amount I needed to achieve the colors I wanted using Russian piping tips. I think if I had used regular tips this would’ve been a non issue.I was concerned and called the company because there is no seal on the individual bottles of color and wanted to confirm this was in fact how they came.I think it’s also super important that you shake the heck out of these before you use it because I had some pretty severe separation. It all came together with about 2 mins of shaking for each color.Over all I’m very happy and will definitely be buying this again when I run out!

I am all for the use of natural, vegetable derived coloring for foods. This is mainly because Red 40 gives me migraines, but also because using something so natural makes you feel healthier, even when you aren't actually eating vegetables!I used these colors in a batch of bath bombs, and I was pretty pleased. I wasn't totally satisfied, however, with the yellow coloring due to the separation that was obvious by looking at the bottle. I have been blaming it on the fact that it is winter, and I believe the product most likely froze during shipment, but I wish they would have insulated it from that effect knowing when they were shipping the product out.With that being said, the yellow seemed to color decently after settling to room temperature and some vigorous shaking and rolling.It is very important to note that I used these in bath bombs, but in each batch I only used approximately 8 drops of color. It did not stain my bath tub, but each bomb had roughly 1 drop in it, so I can't guarantee no tub color with more than one drop. Have fun with them!

The first few uses I was impressed. Let's just say we found lots of reasons to use these food dyes. I need them for things like icing cakes and cupcakes for birthdays, otherwise I end up at Whole Foods paying a good $35. We used all three colors with pretty good results. We made map-water blue, a pale green, and light-light-light red in buttercream.The downside, and what I later found out by coming back to read the reviews, was that the dyes have a very short shelf life. Like a few short months. The dyes start separating (our red and yellow was already on the verge when we got it, turns out) and you won't get the same vibrancy.Now, here's the saddest part. My daughter wanted a carrot cake for her birthday. So I thought, yeah, I can use white chocolate to make the carrot decorations. Got the white chocolate melted, got a decent but very pale green, added a bit more...and seized the chocolate. I went ahead and tried for orange (using the red and yellow of course) and was even more let down by how fast that seized. I managed to eke out a few passable carrots and used the green to write her name and age.This product is for you if you are so tired of Whole Foods not sharing all their food dyes with you. I mean, why don't they carry dyes?? Why? Anyway, this does the job you'll need it for as long as you need it done quickly. For people like me who have children who can't comprehend why they can't have carrot decorations on their carrot cake, the price tag isn't a hindrance.
