Fun set teaches mechanics and motor propulsion

TLDR version: Fun build, like a model car. Wires exposed on the finished models (ALL). Includes USB-C rechargeable "charging head" for power along with a USB-A to USB-C charging cord. See Voltages/Battery for possible danger due to wire exposure. Loss of one star from review due to not showing the wires on the box.Full review:We have owned some single-robot kits made similarly from the same maker. These were a huge hit with our then 5- and 3-year-olds, the 5-year-old building it (and modifying) and the 3-year-old just playing with the finished "robot". These are not quite robots in the traditional sense--they just mechanically repeat motions using a motor that just runs forward. If you were looking for programming, this is not the kit for you.On the other hand, this kit will expose you to various mechanisms and how they can do different things. There's even a robot with legs that walks, propelled by the single motor. To initially assemble it, the parts need to be cut from tabbed plastic part sets, similar to model airplanes and model cars, but with sturdier parts. You'll need a pair of nippers (fine) and possibly a file to get the pieces smooth where they detach from the plastic tabs. Nippers will make your work much easier than if you try simply snapping the parts out from the plastic frames, and if done with precision, you won't need to file them. An 8-year-old could do this, but depending on other factors, may require some adult help. Our 5-year-old was able to assemble the parts using the instructions, but lacked the patience and dexterity required to cut the many individual pieces out well. If you're dealing with a typical kid's attention window, cutting them out and assembling them are two separate task windows with a break in between. All of the robots should take no more than 10 minutes to assemble pre-cut parts assuming the parts are sorted. With all the parts cut out on the table, it could easily extend to 20 minutes each (less as you run low on parts. You can only make one working robot at a time thanks to a single body pack/motor assembly and a single charging head that is USB-C connector-rechargeable.No external batteries are required.Wires:It should be noted that all the models have exposed wires going from the terminals on the head to the body. Unlike our prior 1-off robots, which required AA cells, these charging head wires are vulnerable and quite thin. It may be possible to put some heat-shrink tubing or to wind some electrical tape around them to reinforce them, but their connection points will remain somewhat vulnerable to reckless little hands, meaning the now 4-year-old robot fan will require a bit of schooling about handling the robot and minding the wires. The now 7-year-old has been around a bit and already knows better.Voltages/Battery (keep kids safe):The voltage exposed due to a broken wire are a safe, low DC voltage, but it is unknown whether the rechargeable battery in the head might overheat if they were shorted together. Hopefully the head has a fuse or current limiter inside for this very purpose. Unless the wires break midsection or pull loose from the body, the most likely form of wire failure would be coming loose from the head, the part that holds the rechargeable battery, which would not expose any voltage. I am not a safety expert, but this is something to be aware of regardless: inspect regularly to make sure the wires are ok. The country of origin might not test the effects of a shorted battery output on the charging head. One complaint:The marketing photos do not show these wires which are on EVERY model. This was worth one star off. Some kids are going to immediately notice the difference and think either something is wrong or wish they had a robot that doesn't have wires protruding. The model instructions all clearly show the wires.

Kids had fun

I agree with the 8+ rating. The six year old was good to work together with it and still have fun. The youngest just wanted to play with the pieces.Overall interesting and had no issues with the electrical components. Couple things on the fit but nothing to really complain about. Grew up taking my RC toys apart to try to make something new so this was a fun kit.

cool robot kit

this robot kit is actually pretty fun! it took me a couple of hours to put everything together, but the instructions are clear enough. the robot moves well and it’s really satisfying to watch it work after you finish building it. i like that it has so many functions, so you can try different things with it. only reason i gave it 4 stars is cuz it’s a bit tricky at first. still, super fun and good for learning.

Fun and Rewarding, Though Not Quite as Advertised

This is a neat little robot kit. It can build 12 different robots, each with moving parts powered by small electric motors. The concept is great, and the kit offers plenty of variety to keep things interesting for a while. However, there are some aspects that weren’t clear from the pictures or the listing. For one, assembling these robots requires some wiring work, which isn’t shown in the photos. While that adds an extra layer of complexity, it also makes the assembly process a little harder and the finished robots feel less sleek than they look in the pictures. The wiring can also make them easier to break if handled roughly. That said, it’s still a very cool kit. The fact that it takes time and effort to assemble and then actually moves makes it more rewarding than your average toy. I’m not entirely convinced that toys like this “teach STEM” in a big way, but I do think there’s more to learn here than with most toys. It gives a hands-on look at how motors and electricity work, which is a nice bonus.Overall, despite the added complexity and a few less-polished aspects, this is a fun and engaging kit. It’s a good mix of challenge and reward, and it offers more than just a quick thrill.
