Q: Does the expansion pack allow for 8 players to play instead just 4? or is it simply different boards for the original game?

It has different boards for a more challenging game and plastic tile covers to help keep tiles in place. There are not enough tiles in the game to have 8 players.

Plastic sheets and new player boards only. You need the base game.

This is an expansion with plastic overlay to hold the tiles in place and also a couple of extra board designs.
