Instructions made it really easy to put together
This thing was a lot of fun to assemble me and my 5 year old accomplished it in about a week. Neither of us have driven anything like this before and it seems to be indestructible. We have had a lot of fun with this truck. Would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun crawler that can take some abuse

Build was fun as heck!
Instructions are great! I got this because I wanted build my wife a 4runner off the trx4 platform (I have a 72 blazer high trail) and traxxas is great with tons of aftermarket options.

Most complete kit I have ever built
I have built dozens of kits over the years. The only thing missing from this kit was a body and batteries. I did have to get a new gear from Traxxas directly, but they shipped it to me no questions asked for free. Seriously if you get one of these look into the transmission gear problem. If the gear in the kit doesn't fit the bearing, just call and they will send a new one. They said the new kits do not have this problem, but not all of the old kits have sold, so it is unlikely but possible. They told me I'd have it in 4 days, but I actually got it the next day. The instructions were some of the best I have ever used, and the two things I don't like building were already together. If you like building and don't want any of the RTR bodies then this is a GREAT kit. However if you want any of the RTR bodies, then go with the RTR. You are not saving any money with this kit if you get one of the bodies that they have available in the RTR. I didn't want what everyone has and I love kits. All together with the body I got and paint, I spent about the same as the Tactical RTR at the time.

You must be a builder person!!
It took me a good amount of time to finally pick this particular model, since there are 8 kinds of TRX4.First of all, TRX4 has RTR which let you go out and fun right away. But there are 2 choices. One is classic (Defender, newer G-wagon, or Bronco), and another is trx4 sport. And there are building kit for both. Long wheel base with all the goodies (2 speed, diff lock) and a short wheel base with simple single speed and light weight trx4 sport.I was not able to decided what to get because of the price. I wanted to have fun in building it on my own, but it did not save me much of cost. For the price, trx4 sport buiding kit ($270) was the best bet with cool looking body and outdoor overlanding feature. But sport is a simplified version of trx4, and it did not have what the classis trx4 had. Then, the best bet was defender RTR ($470), since the body is just so great with all the features. (Defender Body itself costs about $190 if you purchase it seperately.)But at the same time, I wanted to find out how 2 speed transmission and the diff lock worked. I was always curious about those mechanism in RC world, and the best way to learn is to build my own. I really like assemble rc cars and model kits, and have been doing it for more than 30yrs.-----------AssemblingThe direction is clear and neat with colored one. It seems very detailed, but I was somewhat confused and made few mistakes after all.The pinion gear and the rear axle were the bomber. To hold the pinion gear on the motor, the set screw must be used. There are two of them, but you MUST use the one with locktite on it. Otherwise, the pinion will move around, and the spur gear teeth may be damaged. The rear axle can be installed wrong way, and then front wheels and rear wheels would spin opposite direction. It is kinda obvious, because of portal axle but trust me. It can happen to anyone who would have portal axle for the first time. Also, those shafts' position can be mixed or confused while looking at the direction. Carefully compare the picture on the direction and actual one.Otherwise, you will have fun finding out how Traxxas engineers designed all the mechanical system. I have enjoyed and learned a lot, and had great time building it.

You get what you pay for, and then you wanna pay more :D :*( :D
Be sure to research the different TRX-4 models because they are different. Also be sure you realize you WILL assemble EVERYTHING! I thought I was just buying a chassis and saving myself $100 instead of getting the Bronco. You still have the buy a body so really you're not saving much in the end at all. After 10 hour of putting this together (first time, chances are you can probably get it done in 5 with more than 1st time experience or 100% following directions :) ) I kinda wish I bought the Bronco with the more authentic look than the Bronco body kit with no detail and 100% user required paintjob.....NOW This all sounds kinda bad but I'm an engineer and despite trying to be lazy, I had to build this thing part by part. I know every gear/bolt is properly torqued, and set. I also know how to dis-assemble the entire thing too. When you're buying something this expensive and plan to use the waterproof aspect of it and beat it up, you will break it. Building it yourself gives you 100% confidence on how to tear it down without being scared of 13 different online instructions with 13 different ways to tear down one part. You also have only yourself to blame for anything broken which is a big relief to me because other products I just wonder is it me or "them"?.So yes it was frustrating putting it together but despite losing the amazing Bronco body, I'm stoked I built it, I learned a lot, and JUST WOW! The attention to details for the drive train! It's not really any different than a real vehicle past the engine up to the wheel hubs. Everything down to the spider gears and lockers are the real deal. The only true downside to this vehicle is the price is just for the main chassis. Batteries which are about $100 - $200 for a charger and battery set are separate and then you search for "TRX-4 accessories"...... Poof $1000 gone and you thought it was just gonna be $369 plus tax :D :D :D :D sucker :P

Easy build kit
This kit has everything you need to put it together. The only thing it doesn't have is the body. The instruction manual is detailed and gives you every step to complete. I am definitely going to be purchasing another kit soon.

Must do build !!
Must buy and build if you enjoy working on your rc crawler. I learned all about my crawler , and now can replace , or fix anything on it. It was a great build and went well. Instructions clear and smart.
