6 Below: Miracle on the Mountain [DVD]

Extra star because it can teach others what to do when lost
Irritating things: So much video of the dude's face I got sick of it and that is not a movie one has to MOVE to be in a movie. Why not splint his leg? Duh. Trees all around him. The lake (even I knew it was a lake NO TREES). If the temps were really 6 below the water would be frozen ice and we'd see his breath. I saw lights behind him at night like all the time. What's wrong with his vision? If it was 6 below and he did fall in water & go the extra mile to save his drugs (mystifying) what in heck was he doing naked? I know drying clothes but 6 below would have killed a naked person and frozen his clothing they would not have fully dried anyway. If the sun had dried the clothes he would have been much warmer and snow would be melting on rocks. So much non-sense. Surprised he survived, maybe next time he'll heed warnings and NOT take the suicide trail before a bad snowstorm. How did he not get his privates frostbitten?Lesson: Don't go snowboarding alone, tell others where you are. Bring a tracker or GPS, lots of protein food, and your own water. A LIGHTER would have helped.

Good movie, but not accurate.
The writers took too many liberties with the actual true story of Eric LaMarque. But it was close enough to make the movie not only interesting, but enjoyable. Awesome mountain scenery and landscapes, Eric's mother played a huge role in the story, but it was his dad that searched the mountain cabin, not his mother as portrayed in the movie. And after 8 days of near impossible survival, he found his own way back to the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area of the Sierra Nevada, he wasn't rescued by a helicopter on a high remote ridge top. Small details also, the search and rescue team had him listed as 6'3"; in reality, Eric was 5'10". Yes I know, this stuff isn't a deal breaker, but then again, don't pass it off as an accurate documentary! Probably would have been better off as an episode of the survival series "I Shouldn't Be Alive" program. But it's worth a watch for sure, your emotions will travel from harrowing, despair, and alarming, to admiration, cheers, and applause. A good way to pass a couple hours.

Gripping story of survival
This is a gripping tale of survival against the odds based on a true story (loosely based, according to some of the critics). Pro hockey player Eric LaMarque was self-destructing, and was addicted to meth. Snowboarding in the mountains, he gets lost and stranded during a snowstorm and must fight his addiction to survive. Josh Harnett's portrayal of LaMarque is pretty good. Some critics called the film dull, and some were offended by its spirituality. I thought it was gripping, and that the spiritual aspect was minor. I recommended it to family members only to find that they had already watched it and agreed that it was a good movie.

Sorvino and Hartnett hold up their end of a questionably true story.
(Major Spoiler Alert) Okay, I'm a little torn on this one. When I first saw the cover of the DVD/Blu Ray ad, I thought this movie was about a romantic couple struggling to survive a plane crash in the mountains, not the most original Hollywood plot but still seeming somewhat interesting. Come to find out, former Oscar winner Mira Sorvino plays the mother (yes, mother, not girlfriend or wife) of Josh Hartnett, who plays the role of Eric LeMarque, a real-life former pro hockey player-turned-snowboarder (and meth addict) who gets lost while snowboarding alone in the California mountains. If you can find it in yourself to get past that glaring casting flaw (Sorvino is only 11 years older than Hartnett in real life), then this otherwise lightweight movie (which could have been done for TV) is sufficient entertainment in that Sorvino and Hartnett know their trade and know what to do with their opportunities (though seemingly both have made only rare recent movie appearances). You may also wonder how Eric managed to get so lost when he was so close to a ski resort, but apparently meth (or his withdrawal from it) clouded his judgment. Just think of the film as similar to having a main course at dinner without any sides; it will suffice, but you may be looking around for the dessert tray. Then again, purportedly, both the movie and book (which I admittedly have not read) aren't true to the real-life story because apparently it was the stepmother, not mother, who instigated a search for Eric. Moreover, it's alleged that Eric was ultimately not exactly husband of the year post his ordeal, with his wife filing for divorce at the time of this writing with many (unproven) accusations. While those circumstances are, of course, out of the hands of Sorvino and Hartnett, therein lies my dilemma: If you know the truth beforehand, do you root for someone to survive who you know may ultimately become an abusive person later in life?

Well done!
This movie, though painful to watch in some spots, seemed to be a good illustration of Eric LeMarque’s Survival Story. Thank you for sharing.

I never give negative reviews, but....in this case....
The disturbing part of this movie, was that I couldn't figure out if the mother was the wife.Props to the real mom for looking so young (if she does), but the producer/director should have picked at least someone 15 years (realistically) older than the the son.

very inspirational
This movie is a true story. It keeps you on the edge of your seat most of the time. Sorvino did a great job playing the mom.

Even in the heat of the summer...
I felt the chill!Yes, engaging, frustrating, beautifully filmed and ultimately satisfying - right up to the 'real person' footage at the end. Based on a true story so cannot quibble really and well-acted by JH in particular who carried the film for much of its running time. Why 'frustrating'? Because I wanted him to be rescue much sooner than he was....but that was not the story, of course.
