Q: I am trying to compare this to the air free onix 3000. how does the air oasis sanitize surfaces versus air? the air free does not claim to so this.

The unit produces very low levels of ozone at safe levels. In one independent study, after running for 3 hours in an open room there were no detectable levels of ozone present. I have no reservations about using this with my 5 children in my home. I chose this unit after a lot of research. For dealing with viruses/bacteria, there is nothing better out there. The UV-C chamber is a coronavirus death trap--nothing gets out of that chamber alive (not the flu, H1N1, H5N1, MRSA, coronaviruses--nothing). You can read a lot more about pathogen kill rates on the company's web page. The 3-way technology combination does great for both air and surfaces. I'm a bit skeptical about the coverage rate of 3,000 Square feet, but that's the same for almost every stand-alone treatment system (as opposed to the systems that integrate with the building's HVAC system). Viruses are tiny, they are way smaller than the filtration level of physical filters anything "airborne" goes right through them--not so for this unit.

It has been awhile since I bought this one, but I seem to recall that I read that it does have low ozone.

Q: Is this effective for formaglehyde?

Yes. 98% plus reduction after 3 hours of use in a 2,000 square foot room (3rd party test). It follows that more continuous use would further reduce levels. The manufacturer recommends running for 8 hours minimum for maximum efficiency.

Q: How does one know when the cell needs to be replaced?

For normal usage, right around the 2 year mark the unit will have a single beep that repeats indicating the AHPCO cell needs to be replaced.
