I Am Every Good Thing Hardcover – Picture Book, September 1, 2020

What a beautiful book for a young African-American boy. Beautifully illustrated. And the message is so wonderfully positive. This is a much needed book for any family library or collection. I bought it for my grandson. He’s three years old and I know he will love it.

Uplifting book. My son enjoys it. He's in 1st grade so I help him through the book. But it's a great way to enhance his reading.

As a mother who wants to raise her child aware of the realities of life yet still focusing on my sons strengths in this world at the forefront, I instantly fell in love with this book AND bought it for every single nephew I have and for the sons of every friend I know.Finally, a book that acknowledges my baby for who he is within, before focusing solely on the color of his skin. The sheer genius of the writer and illustrator to collaborate on a novel that illustrates colored boys and girls but speaks about everything else more important such as being brave, having confidence, being important and worthy of love, being a great friend and both respected and respectful.. exploring, learning, laughing. I cannot emphasize enough the gratitude of this book. I bought this for my son who is only 1.5years old and truly love knowing this will be a book forever near his night stand as he grows.Highly recommend tenfold.

The book is beautiful. It’s large and well illustrated. But most important it’s beautifully written and contains an important message - ‘I am good’. For high energy kids always getting into trouble (like mine) this is an important message.

I knew from Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut that Barnes and James are a powerhouse: positive, upbeat, and full of life. I Am Every Good Thing is such an incredibly positive and uplifting book, I had to read it to my own kids the day it arrived and to my two 3rd grade classes the day after - which is today. As a teacher, this books allows me to jump start important conversation around race and racism, identity, perceptions, stereotypes, and equity. This book provides an important mirror to my students of African ancestry, but it also provides a window and a segue to all of my students to understand the challenges Black men face daily. It is full of positive affirmations and I will make some of them part of my classroom culture. "I am worthy of success, of respect, of safety, of happiness. I am worthy to be loved." Wow. The art is breathtaking. The verse flows from one page to the next. Hardly have I come across a book so perfect.I am every good thing is a celebration of Black boys and as the mother of a Black boy, this book hits home. My son can see himself in this book. He finds a shining piece of him on every page and for that I will be forever grateful!

Heard about this while author & illustrator were being interviewed on NPR and ordered it immediately while in the car. The words are wonderful and the illustrator's work is absolutely beautiful!! I love that the book puts our beautiful brown boys in the same spaces as everyone else with no limits on what they can see themselves doing. I am so encouraged by it just reading it at bedtime. I also appreciate the variety of shapes and huges of brown boys documented here. The beautifully strong images are the perfect complement to the beautifully strong wording to remind both the reader and listener that we all have value. What a wonderful job the author and illustrator did here! So glad that their work is here to meet the demand for this important type of material!
