A brilliant film
I saw hacksaw ridge 8 times at the cinema, a bit obsessed with Desmond Doss's story it's unbelievable what he did. I've had other films that affected me similarly like braveheart & shawshank redemption, they are brilliant films but somehow this film is on another level just because of the story of desmond doss & what he achieved. I got the soundtrack, Redemption At Hacksaw Ridge book & watched conscientious objector documentary. I'm just waiting for the dvd release now.

Not happy with the condition of package as it arrived wet ...
Not happy with the condition of package as it arrived wet and not happy that the one I brought does not play within my region. Total waste of my money.

Gets good once the action starts, but is let down by the first half
A film based on the true story of Desmond Doss, a medic who saved 75 lives in battle without ever carrying a firearm, sounded to me like something that had to be seen. The movie starts off well showing Doss growing up as a child with his disfunctional, but religiously principled family, and builds the motivations as to why he made the decision to enlist.Where the film starts to go badly wrong is from the moment adult Doss appears, all the way through to the end of the boot camp story (roughly an hour). Andrew Garfield plays the main character in a way that is irritating, smug, grinning and naive, rather than a serious conscientious objector with strong religious values. I don't know if the writers had watched Forrest Gump and Full Metal Jacket then decided to try to combine the two, but I honestly almost switched the movie off.The movie gets a lot better once the action starts, apart from the ridiculous notion that troops would be climbing up 100m cliff on a single net ladder. The film does a good job of conveying the complete confusion and horror of battle. If the movie had stayed more on this side it would have been a 5-star review. But too much bad writing and acting spoiled half the film, so I can only give it average marks.
