2 more years of SPIDER-MAN Newspaper Strips

This beautiful Hard Cover from the Library Of American Comics and IDW reprints two full years (1983 and 1984 ). That's 730 strips 0f Spider-Man. 104 Full Color Sunday strips one to a page, and the sharp black & white daily strips reprinted three to a page for the rest. All in a sewn binding Landscape Format (Wider then Tall). It has a matching dust jacket and an attached linen book mark. The introduction by Bruce Canwell is interesting because it mostly consists of an interview with Jim Shooter in which he talks about plotting those early strips for Stan Lee to write. It really should have been in one of the first volumes, since that is the time period it pertains to. But better late then never. It would be nice if some slueth work was put into plotting this batch of stories. Also after Fred Kida left the daily strip at the end of March 1984 we get 9 months of dailies only signed by Stan. While obviously the work of many Marvel artists, it would be nice if some of the names where at least identified. I will give my guesses here later in my review and I would appreciate any insight from knowledgeable readers. The first two volumes are of John Romita Senior art with Larry Lieber (Stan's little brother) taking over the end of Volume 2. Volume 3 continues Larry Lieber's art with Fred Kida taking over for part of the volume. This volume begins with Fred Kida on both Sundays and Dailies. Fred Kida was a golden age artist would did some work on Airboy and a couple Silver Age Sub-Mariner stories. Kida turns in some of the best art of his career here. He does a very good job of following the polished style of John Romita Senior. After the first couple Sunday strips in this volume Floro Dery is brought in as the artist for the Sunday only strips, while Kida remains on the Dailes even though they have a shared storyline. Right before Kida's departure Floro Dery does two weeks of dailies, but that must have been too much for him because then Kida comes back for a couple weeks and then the dailies becomes a hodgepodge of styles for the rest of the volume. Floro is an artist from the Philippines and has a very floral pattern like finish. He has a very different style from Kida and the two's work doesn't always mesh very well. Since Floro had very little American work before this, I have often wondered how he came to be selected. The storylines for this volume seem fairly longer for this volume, with only 3 or 4 stories each year. The first story of the volume is my clear favorite since it is set in the Marvel world with Peter Parker going on a cruise to the Bermuda Triangle where their they discover Warlord Krang and Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner. It also introduces Oceanographer Sam Taylor. She is a knock out Platinum Blonde. In the 8 year run of strips (so far) and prior to the Mary Jane Watson wedding, Stan has Peter Parker playing the field with M.J. popping in and out of the strip. The next story has the return of M.J. as a Computer Sales Person. While this story has some funny bits like Aunt May robbing Mail boxes it all seems very dated, and drives home the 80's decade. A criminal is masterminding a Crime Wave Spree by putting subliminal ads in video games. In the next story Spidey gets Amnesia and thinks he is the Hit Man called the Liquidator out to kill a big time gangster named Braxton. When this story concludes we get a connected story about Spidey being used by Braxton's hot girlfriend. This woman who has the hots for Spider-Man. He knows its wrong but likes her anyway. Of course MJ sees them together and departs for England. The final story has Spider-Man joining some Worldwide Secret Organization to fight terrorists. As I was reading the last couple storylines I kept a list of artists that I thought had worked on the 8 months of uncredited Daily strips. While it is pretty easy to spot the inking style of Vince Colletta many of these are just pure guesses. Frank Springer, Vince Colletta,, Rick Leonardi, George Tuska, Sal Buscema, Al Milgrom, Don Perlin and Pablo Marcus.I do know in the upcoming Volume Five, Flash Gordon artist Dan Barry takes over for a spell before Larry Lieber returns. I also know I will be eagerly awaiting the fun derived from these Hard To Find Stan Lee Spider-Man stories.Highly Recommended.
